Philosophy of Mathematics
Although many people may not think so, math is about more than calculations and answers. I am the stage manager for theatrical productions at Mount Saint Mary College. This involves a lot of scheduling. Since my mind works so mathematically I am able schedule rehearsals around multiple people’s schedules. There have been many times when I am a stage manager for more than one show at a time and I am still able to keep track of everything I need to know. Since I have been doing this for the past three years, I cannot stop scheduling even when I do not have to. I am part of other activities on campus and when they are scheduling events I can tell them if there is a conflict with that scheduling time. To do this I had to keep track every person’s schedule every day. If the director of the main stage production asked me why someone was not at rehearsal I was able to tell him where they are and if they would be able to come later in the rehearsal.
I am able to schedule because if I see or hear a time or day for something I am able to recall the numbers from my memory. I can organize the times and days into a calendar in my mind like a filing system. I have always been able to remember numbers. This has helped me problem solve because I can do math problems in my head. This is useful at grocery stores when comparing prices. Imagine buying a pack of 24 waters and there is another pack of 28 bottles for a dollar more. I try to figure out how much a single water bottle is in each of the packs and buy the one with the cheapest bottles because that is the better deal.
My abilities in scheduling and problem solving may benefit me when I pursue a school guidance counseling career. Part of my job would be to schedule students’ classes and help them to apply for college. I would be able to remember the deadlines for everything that needs to be done when applying for college. It will also help me financially for the rest of my life because even though we don’t realize it, we use math every single day.
